Kaniyambetta Grama Panchayat – History and Geographical Profile

Kaniyambetta Panchayat was formed in 1962 from Kaniyambetta Village, which was formerly part of the Ponginichikkalloor Amsom of the South Wayanad Taluk in the erstwhile Kozhikode District. The Panchayat covers an area of 37.8 square kilometres and is predominantly an agricultural region characterized by small hills and paddy fields.

The areas that are now part of the Panchayat were part of Purakkadi Village before 1923. As part of the resettlement process, certain areas were separated from Purakkadi and formed into Ponginichikkalloor Amsom. The area was named after Pongini Bhagavathy Temple, which was highly renowned in those days and was located within the region. The Amsom was further divided into two desams, namely Ponginichikkalloor and Pulpadi.

According to a Government Order issued in 1961, Ponginichikkalloor Amsom was subsequently reorganized as Kaniyambetta Village. The present Kaniyambetta Panchayat comprises the entire Kaniyambetta Village along with a portion of Nadavayal Village, specifically Wards 1 and 2.

With its landscape of small hills and fertile paddy fields, Kaniyambetta is primarily an agricultural area. The Panchayat reflects the traditional rural character of Wayanad and has historical, cultural, and agricultural significance.
